Given the GTA’s temperature extremes, you know how important your home’s HVAC system is. That’s why it gets regular maintenance is critical. In the meantime, here are a few things you can do yourself to keep your system in good shape. 1. Clean or replace your air filter Your air conditioner’s filter should be cleaned or replaced once a month in high season. Filters clogged with dust and dirt can reduce airflow and make your AC less efficient, so be sure to check yours often. Some filters are reusable and can be cleaned, while others must regularly be replaced. To clean your filter, follow manufacturer instructions and make sure to let it air dry completely.
2. Check your thermostat An embarrassing number of heating and cooling problems are caused by poorly set thermostats. Make sure your thermostat’s batteries don’t need to be changed and that it’s set to the proper temperature. If you have a programmable one, verify that it’s set to the appropriate temperature for different times of day. 3. Make sure the outside unit is clean Don’t forget to regularly clean the outside of the unit. Brush away leaves and dirt and remove all debris from around it to prevent obstructions. After turning the power off, you can gently it with a garden hose, but never use a power washer. Keep the hose at a 45-degree angle and take care not to damage the fins of the coil. 4. Check the condenser fan The condenser unit of your air conditioner contains a fan that can get damaged or, on older models, may need oiling. Check the condition of the fan blades. If any of them are damaged, they need to be replaced. 5. Examine the wiring and parts If you suspect there’s something wrong but can’t put your finger on it, check the condition of the parts and wiring. First, turn off the power then look behind the removable panel on the condensing unit. Look for signs of burning, melting or loose electrical connections.
